SERVING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH MY LIONS CLUB

I have been a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs for over 25 years. Currently I am a member of the Deptford Township Lions Club. While there are 1.4 millions Lions Club members worldwide, I am always surprised when I meet someone and they have no idea who we are and what we do.

Lions are your neighbors and friends who work towards improving the community where they live and the world. My club, during the last year, provided money for a much needed helmet needed by a disabled child to protect her skull. We also planted a tree in a local park. This August 22nd we will be holding our first children's health fair to provide vision screening and other health services to disadvantages children.

We also collect used eye glasses. This month we will be turning in over 1,500 pairs of glasses. These glasses will be refurbished and the glasses will be provided to those who cannot afford them.

Internationally, my club donated to help the relief effort in Nepal after the earthquake in that country. When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, Lions International was there with $500,000 to help our state recover.

Where there is a need, there is a Lion. Lions are people who have fun helping others. This blog will chronicle the service of the Lions in New Jersey. Hopefully, some of those who read this blog will want to join us.

As our founder, Melvin Jones, said "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else". That is what Lions do and they have fun doing it.
